Session 12

2026-09-08 · 2026-W37

What happened

Second session, poetry again — no set texts have arrived, so the timetabled 'second text' block ran as Ozymandias continuation. Declined to source a PDF of An Inspector Calls (in copyright); pointed to Cornwall library e-lending and secondhand school editions instead. Retrieval starter: both quotations recalled partially, then corrected and copied accurately four times. Taught sonnet form as ironic mockery (linked to 'the hand that mocked them' and the double sense of 'mocked'), corrected a misreading that the sculptor praised the king, then the traveller framing — she reached 'only one person has seen him in this poem' unaided. First paragraph attempt stapled four ideas together; narrowed to one angle on instruction and held. Closed on 'The lone and level sands stretch far away', which she unpacked as emptiness and burial after two staged hints. Visible fatigue in the last ten minutes.

Planned next

Starter: both Ozymandias quotations from memory, checking 'beside' — third slip today, so score it properly. Then close the last loose end on P1.01 (Shelley's Romantic context, hostility to tyranny, 1818 publication) as a clause, not a paragraph. Then a full what–how–why paragraph on power in Ozymandias, one angle only, to test whether the narrowing holds unaided. Still blocked on all four set texts.

What this session changed

TopicNameChangeEvidence recorded
P1.01Developing → DevelopingSonnet form recognised (counted 14 lines) and read as ironic use of a love form to mock a tyrant, with prompting. Traveller framing worked out largely unaided: 'the king wanted to be seen for all his might, but only one person has seen him in this poem'. Final line unpacked as emptiness and burial after two hints.
K3.2Not started → DevelopingSecond instance, different aspect: identified the narrative framing (speaker → traveller → sculptor → king) as distancing that undercuts Ozymandias's demand to be seen, and read the poem's closing line as structural placement. Prompted rather than unaided, so developing not secure.
K1Developing → DevelopingFirst attempt appended new notes to yesterday's paragraph — four undeveloped ideas, no single line of argument. On instruction to pick one angle, cut to the sand-as-time reading and it cohered. Narrowing was instructed, not independent.
K5Developing → DevelopingWriter as subject held through most of the session ('Shelley ends with...', 'Shelley presents...') but collapsed under fatigue at the close: 'Shelley did really good on showing the irony' — evaluative rather than analytical.
K4.2Not started → GapWrote 'nothing besides remains' three times inside quotation marks after copying 'Nothing beside remains' correctly four times in the same session. Also invented 'nothing but rubble' in the starter. Recall is not the problem; checking is. Rule agreed: reread inside the quote marks before moving on.
