What happened

Writing a line's equation from its gradient and start value had slipped: gradient found correctly twice with working, but m and c swapped until she counted along the line. Ran 11:02-11:59 as the day's maths practice (the 09:15 block had 6 min logged); the whole block went on straight-line equations after two misses in the morning warm-up. All non-calc, typed. Item 1, scaffolded, line through (0,3) and (2,11): across 2, up 8 right; '4, 8/2'; fill y = []x + [] -> 'i don't know'; which box takes the 4 -> 'b' (on its own, wrong); x = 0 in y = []x + 4 -> '4'; what must the lone box be -> '0' (wrong). Re-approached by counting: x = 1 -> '7'; x = 10 with the sum asked -> '43]' bare, then '4*10 = 40, 40 + 3 = 43'; with x -> 'y = 4x + 3'. Naming gradient and start value -> 'i don't know'; which number multiplied x -> '4'. Break 11:33, under a minute. Item 2, fresh, (0,5) and (3,11), gradient only asked: '11 - 5 = 6, 6/3 = 2, y = 5x + 2' - gradient right, both lines unprompted, equation swapped. x = 0 check -> '2'; which number stands alone, 2 or 5 -> '2' (wrong); x = 10 with sum -> '5*10 = 50, 50 + 2 = 52'; x = 1 -> '7'; x = 3 -> '5*3 = 15, 15 + 2 = 17'; count on from 7 -> '12, 14'; 7 + 2 -> '9'; 9 + 2 -> '11'; which equation says start at 5, add 2 for every x -> 'b' (y = 2x + 5); check with x = 3 written and right, 11; gradient, 2 or 5 -> '2'. Item 3, fresh, no hints, 'start at 1, add 6 for every x' -> 'y = 6*x +1' correct. 3 items set, 3 attempted, 0 blank; 2 'i don't know' replies, each answered once narrowed. Not run: angle rule cold, minus-bracket expansion, recurring decimal, unlabelled estimated mean, the mixed set of four.

Planned next

FIRST, not run on 6 Oct - quick no-notes questions, one per message, ten minutes by the clock: a straight line through (0, 2) and (4, 14): work out the gradient, write the equation, check it with x = 4 (A9-A10); write the rule for two angles across a crossing (G3); expand 5 − 3(x + 2) only (A17); one estimated mean with units not mentioned (S4). Then the mixed set of four that was cut, with show that 0.7272… = 8/11, no cue, inside it (N10). At the Thursday lesson block: the new topic, solving inequalities (A22, with the error-interval notation, N15) - worked example beside the matching equation with her writing each line, two guided items, four on her own. If a line's equation is wrong, count along from the start value before any formula; no empty-box frames; on a stall give an either/or.

What this session changed

TopicNameChangeEvidence recorded
A9-A10Secure → Developing6 Oct, non-calc, after 2 misses in the morning warm-up. Gradient from two points 2/2 unaided with lines ('4, 8/2'; '11 - 5 = 6, 6/3 = 2'). Equation from gradient and start value 0/2 first time: 'i don't know' on (0,3),(2,11); 'y = 5x + 2' for gradient 2, start 5, then 52 and 17 computed from it. Right only after counting along the line ('y = 4x + 3'; y = 2x + 5 chosen from two). One fresh unaided item in 'start at 1, add 6 for every x' wording: 'y = 6*x +1'. Last check 2 Sep.
