Exam Skills — Technique read of the Literature placement (test #4, 2 h window, 32 marks). Started 11:28, closed by Paige after 26 min — 94 of 120 min unused. Order: Q2 (recall) saved first, then Q1 (unseen). Q1 21 min of 30 guide, 2/24; Q2 4 min of 10 guide, 2/8. 0 blanks, nothing flagged. Marks lost to technique rather than knowledge: Q1 — one sentence for a 24-mark question (tariff not matched, extended answer never reached a band) when she had shown she understood the poem; Q2 — quotations given without the explanation the question asked for twice, and a theme given where a form/structure fact was asked. Time hog: none in the usual sense — Q1 took under its guide and scored under half, so the problem is stopping, not stalling. No checking time used: closed with 78% of the window unused and a one-sentence 24-marker on the page.
Computer Science — Placement paper 2 (theory), test #2, sat Mon 28 Sep 12:52, 28 of 120 min, closed by her. 7/53 (13%), attempt #10. 17 of 22 questions typed 'skip' as the placement instructions allowed; all 17 sit on untaught content in strands D, S, N, C and Q. Q3 (binary to decimal) and Q6 (binary addition) each held focus for 7 min before the skip — she tried both. Attempted and scored: hardware/software definitions 2/2 (S01); ASCII D → 68, code 99 → c 2/2 (D07); PAN/LAN/WAN 1/3 with LAN and WAN swapped (N02); OS functions 0/2 — 'ram and memory', a component not a function (S07); the 6-mark discuss on facial recognition at the school gate 2/6, Level 1 — one ethical point ('might scare the students') and one privacy point with a consequence ('if someone hacks the software they would know where the students walk'), no parents or school, no benefit weighed, no conclusion, 3 min on a 9-min guide (E01). Diagnostic result: strands D, S, N, C, Q are notstarted in practice; the extended-response question was attempted, which is the behaviour being watched. No status changes.
Exam Skills — Technique read of the CS paper 2 placement (test #2, 2 h window, 53 marks, guide 90 min). Started 12:52 Mon 28 Sep, closed by Paige after 28 min — 92 of 120 min unused. Order: Q1, Q4, Q7, Q22 (the six-marker, fourth, against the instruction to do it last), then Q2, Q3, Q5, Q6, Q8–Q11, Q16–Q21, Q12–Q15. No flags. 17 'skip' entries as the placement allowed, all on untaught content, so not counted as avoidance; 0 typed blanks. Time: Q3 and Q6 (binary) 7 min each before skipping — effort on untaught content, not a time hog since neither had a guide she could meet. The six-marker: 3 min against a 9-min guide, two sentences, one of three named groups, no verdict — Level 1, 2/6; this is the same shape as yesterday's Literature one-sentence 24-marker and is the technique target: the extended answer is attempted but stops at the first idea. Marks lost to technique rather than knowledge: Q22 — 2 further marks were available from the school's side and a verdict with content she had (she named the hack risk); Q11 — 'ram and memory' answered the component not the function, a command-word loss on a topic she partly had.

English Language — Placement paper (test #3, typed, reading half of the fiction paper) sat and marked: 9/40, 0 blank of 4, closed by her at 32 of 120 min (attempt #11). List question 4/4 — four distinct points from the right lines. Language question 2/8, Level 1: one quotation from inside the lines, a literal comment and personification described in her own words with no effect; the word → suggests → reader chain did not appear. Structure question 2/8, Level 1: opening focus and a change of focus named, generic 'read on' effect, stayed on structure, ending not mentioned. 'Do you agree' question 1/20, Level 1: one sentence taking a view, no quotation — this question shape has never been taught. Seven spelling slips across four short typed answers. No teaching ran; the hyena structure paragraph from session 47 is still open.
Exam Skills — Technique read of test #3 (English Language placement, fiction reading, 40 marks, typed): handed in by her at 32 of 120 minutes, 0 blank of 4, no flags, answered in paper order with no return recorded. Time ran inverse to marks: 9 min on the 4-mark list (guide 5), 16 min on the 8-mark language question (guide 10), 3 min on the 8-mark structure question (guide 10), 2 min on the 20-mark evaluation (guide 20) — 25 of 30 focused minutes on 12 marks, 5 minutes on 28. The 20-marker is one sentence and the structure answer three. Both the paper's instructions (half the marks are on the last question) and the chat opener (go back to the biggest question and add a paragraph before handing in) were general; neither changed the sitting. Marks lost to technique rather than knowledge are mainly on the structure question and the length of the last answer; the evaluation question's content is untaught.

10:45English Literature — Macbeth: how to read it

English Literature — CORRECTION (same day): this session ran 11:55-12:07, about 12 minutes, not 20 - the tutor misjudged the time and logged early; the duration field overstates by about 8 minutes. She pointed this out and carried on; the continuation is logged as its own session. Extra time at her own request, no block (the timetable shows group): the start of Act 1 Scene 3 was read alone in one 13-line chunk and the foul/fair echo was reached with support. Act versus scene asked first: correct at once. With a one-line setup and a countable question she read from Macbeth's entrance to the third 'All hail' by herself and gave all three titles (Glamis, Cawdor, king hereafter), 3/3. Recalled from this morning that Duncan has already given him Cawdor, 1/1; dramatic irony then named by the tutor (told, not asked back). Macbeth's first line copied exact (lower-case i). Shared words with the witches' Scene 1 line found, 1/1. Open effect question on why Shakespeare gives him the witches' words: no answer offered at first; a two-way choice (connected or separate) answered at once; then a frame-completed sentence with Shakespeare as subject and the audience's response, spelled 'thair connected'. One line paraphrased correctly with the book's side notes only ('who shall be king after this'). Book closed, one sentence: the witches tell him he is going to be king - correct. 10 items set, 10 attempted, 0 final blanks, 1 initial non-answer. The rest of Scene 3 (the witches' opening, Banquo's prophecies, Ross's news, Macbeth's reaction) was unread at this point; session 62's open item stands for that. No two-line close.
English Literature — Continuation of the extra Macbeth work at her request, 12:07-12:15 (8 minutes), no block. No duration is entered on this record on purpose: session 63's 20-minute field already equals the true total for 11:55-12:15, so the day's hours stay right. Act 1 Scene 3 carried on: with a one-line setup she read alone from Banquo's 'Good sir, why do you start' to 'Banquo and Macbeth, all hail!' (about 18 lines) and gave the prophecy to Banquo correctly (father to a king but not one himself; 'farther', lower-case 'banquo'). Plot recall from the morning, about 80 minutes on: Macbeth murders Banquo, 1/1; the link between the prophecy and the murder was then made by the tutor. Told, not read: the witches vanish and the lords bring the Cawdor news. On Banquo's 'devil' line: who is meant and what has come true, 2/2; then, with no frame, a full because-sentence that Banquo does not trust the witches, using the word 'devil' as evidence. Scene 3 quote chosen and copied by her: 'What can the devil speak true?' (comma after 'What' dropped). 6 items set, 6 attempted, 0 blank. Two-line close written. She kept her own count of the time and was right each time; the tutor was not. Unread in Scene 3: the witches' opening, the lords' speeches, Macbeth's asides and the end of the scene. Scene 2 still not read whole.

English Language — Placement paper 2 (test #5, typed, non-fiction reading: a 2020s column and an 1868 Cornish memoir on walking to school) sat and marked: 7/40, 0 blank of 4, closed by her at 26 of 120 min (attempt #12). True-statements question 4/4. Summary question 3/8, Level 2 bottom: four paired details from both texts joined by 'but', two emerging inferences, no 'which shows', one factual slip (said Source B gives no age), 19 min. Language question (12) 0: five words, no quotation, 2 min. Comparing-viewpoints question (16) 0: one sentence restating the question, 2 min — this shape has never been taught. Seven spelling slips in about 75 typed words (lollypop, whatching, farwell, attaked, diffrent, atatoods, then for than). No teaching ran; the hyena structure paragraph from session 47 is still open.
English Language — Afternoon warm-up plus resit (test #6, attempt #13). The parent reported that this morning's two zeros came from not understanding what the questions asked, and had talked it through with her. Warm-up 15:47–16:20, typed, on two short storm passages written for the purpose: she put the language question into her own words correctly first time ('the language they write to use and why I think they used it'); asked only for one quotation, she gave quotation, what it suggests and what the reader feels with no mention of steps. The comparing question she read as 'two quotes, compare the quotes' — the word 'attitudes' was missing; after it was explained she needed three prompts (one writer only; then her language answer again; then both attitudes given to one writer) before writing, unaided, one sentence with a quotation from each writer and 'but'. Saying the paper target back failed three times (never included 'quotation'). Resit at 18:40 on this morning's sources: language question 2/12 (one quotation, literal comment, 3 min), comparing question 5/16 (a quotation from each source, some different ideas, parent's versus child's perspective named, 16 min); 7/28 against 0/28. Hyena paragraph from session 47 still open. Her two closing lines, written after the marks: 'Today I took my second English language placement test. Next we're going to look at what we are doing.'
